ChaoticD here and today we will be going through some questions and answers about The Tomorrow Children 2D. If you have any additional questions, please comment below.
Where can I play it?
The Tomorrow Children 2D will be available to play on this website as well as the official Scratch website at scratch.mit.edu/users/ChaoticD/ as soon as it releases.
What devices will I be able to use to play it?
The game is being built for both PC and phone controls and is playable directly from the web browser. I may look into how we can bring it as a separate downloadable application in the future.
How does it Control?
The Tomorrow Children 2D uses coordinate based tracking for every object in the game to create a seamless scrolling experience. While Scratch does not have access to a “Camera” as most game engines, this helps to create the illusion that there is one by moving every single object in unison as it is being changed and modified by other players online. In this way objects pan into and out of screen view accurately. As Scratch does not allow for objects to be completely off screen, every object has been coded to appear and disappear as the players location reaches or leaves the object.
How does the Online work?
Normally online through the cloud on Scratch can only include up to 10 Cloud Variables for sending and receiving information. By combining all of the games number tracking into a large decimal based value, The Tomorrow Children combines multiple variables and information into different decimal positions of the same Cloud Variable. This allows things to update seamlessly without trying to run everything at the same time as well as increase the amount of things tracked by the Cloud significantly over 10. Since the original “The Tomorrow Children” only made players visible when performing actions, this also frees up the Cloud from having to display hundreds of player coordinates at the same time on screen.
How does Mining work?
When near an island, players will be able to use a Pickaxe, Shovel, Chainsaw, or Rammer. The Rammer can generate platforms by creating cloned floor wherever the player uses the Rammer. The Pickaxe and Shovel will instead create a clone of a hole to create the illusion that you have dug into the island at any angle or location. Upon reaching a cave inside of an island, the exterior of the cave will fade out to show players the inside for exploration. After mining Coal, Iron, and Crystal or chopping down trees for wood, you can take the material back to the Loading Area to take it back to town.
How many players can be Online at the same time?
There will be no player cap for the launch of the game. The Tomorrow Children 2D will allow for as many people to play together as possible. This may change in the future based on feedback and performance. A scratch account under the “Scratcher” Title is required to connect to the cloud. To obtain a “Scratcher” Title, be active for 2 weeks and upload a project online.
How do you win the game?
You can progress through the game by rebuilding the current town. A town requires gathered material, buildings, and material tracked online through the cloud. Every players town will be at the same progress as players move material and rebuild together. When a town is completed, the game will transition to a brand new town.
Do I improve or Level up?
Rescuing civilians, gathering material, defeating enemies, and rebuilding the town will earn you “Toil” experience and “Coupons” Currency. Upon reaching enough Toil you will level up and increase your stats to help rebuild the town even faster. Coupons can be spent to purchase new equipment at the stores for you to use. Toil, Levels, and Coupons will not be tracked once the game is closed. Upon restarting the game, each player will be reset back to level 1.
